ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS:   Cleaning of Brushes and Art Equipment

  1. No washing of brushes is allowed in the kitchen or in the bathroom.
  2. We provide buckets of water and these will be located either in the hall or downstairs atthe rear of the building.
  3. Use your rags or paper towels to wipe as much paint from your brushes before using water or solvents to clean.
  4. If paint is to be cleaned from the palette, use a paper towel to wipe off and throw this in your plastic bag.
  5. All turpentine is to be taken home – store only in containers with lids.

ART MATERIALS – GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. Series 1 paint tubes mainly consist of all the earth colours – the cheapest pigments.
  2. Series 1 HUES are manufactured approximations of more expensive pigments, hence will not have the same opacity or transparency or colour brilliance of the more expensive pigments.
  3. Good brands will show pigment codes used, and whether the colour is transparent or opaque.  Look for paint manufacturers who conform to ASTM standards, and these brands will clearly show whether the paint is non-toxic or contains known carcinogens.
  4. Be aware that bargain basement paint brands contain less pigment, less binder and more filler, and your colour mixing and results that you may want to obtain will be severely HAMPERED by the paint & mediums’ quality.
  5. Some countries have very lax environmental laws, so where possible, support only those manufacturers that adhere to strict environmental controls.
  6. The quality of your brushes will also impact on the handling of the paint, and you will be doing yourself a dis-service if you only buy very cheap brushes.
  7. Always use Low Odour or Citrus Turpentine ONLY.
  8. All bottles should have lids and be clearly labeled.
  9. Keep lids on all mediums when not in use.
  10. Invest in your art education and yourself and buy the best quality art materials you can afford, as you really will get what you pay for.
  11. Some of the best brands for oil painters are Winsor & Newton; Art Spectrum; Daler-Rowney Georgian.
  12. Some of the best brands for acrylic painters are Atelier Interactive; Matisse; A2 Chroma (student brand).
